How Come The Dursleys Didn’t Just Let Harry Potter Go?
In Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, book 1 of the HP series by J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter gets several letters from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry because his relatives, the Dursleys, refused to let him attend the magical school. But why? Why didn’t they just let him go?
It’s clear from the very beginning that neither Petunia nor Vernon Dursley want Harry Potter around. They hate him. Even their son, Dudley Dursley, hates him. They hurt him. They don’t care about him. They don’t love him.
So, when presented with an opportunity to get rid of Harry, why didn’t they take it? Why didn’t they let Harry go to Hogwarts and then tell the wizards that since they want Potter back so much, then they should be the ones to take care of him?
It’s a wonder, isn’t it, that they kept Harry with them all this time? Like, when they were preparing to leave 4 Privet Drive because of all the Hogwarts letters they’ve been getting, they still took Harry with them instead of just leaving him.
Is it because, way deep down, they do actually care about him even just a little? Or is it that the wizards, like Albus Dumbledore maybe, since he’s the one who dumped Potter in their doorstep, are forcing them to take care of Potter, and they can’t just refuse or else something bad will happen to them or something?
If that’s the case, then it’s no wonder that they really hate Harry and have no qualms making his life miserable and mistreating him.
